My mother and her love of quilting she past down to me and to my family. I want to be able to share her love and compassion of it with others it has healed me in so many ways. Many of you know that my mother committed suicide she battled with Alzheimer's and Dementia for about 5 years.
But that isn't what I would like people to remember I would like people to remember that she was a loving caring woman who loved every single person. No matter your race or color she loved you for you...
My mom designed a lot of quilts herself which is probably where I got my designing from and my passion of quilting came from years of seeing family and friends and strangers falling in loving with the quilts my mom made..............
My mother also did A LOT of hand work for my grandma Janetta ( my name sake) she did a lot of needle turn applique and a ton of hand quilting my mother was a 3rd generation quilter and I am a 4th (or 5th) generation quilter. She would sit and hand applique and help me with my homework on some days. I would get to help. I started hand quilting at the age of 5 momma was 9 when she started. she was born in 1948 and began quilting in 1957. I was born in 1970 and started 1975. I did set it aside once boys came into the picture but, picked it back up 3 years later once I got married and began my family.
My grandma and I had spent some time together and one day we all went to the local quilt shop in Brigham City and my grandma got me a cross stitch Bambi name and baby weight wall hanging to do. I worked very hard on that for a while ( i have since finished it as an adult) This girl wanted to quilt! grandma use to let us sit under the quilt and play and watch her form underneath she always said to me if you can see if from under you can learn it from the top. weird to say but I did as I was told. I use to poke the bottom of the quilt and she would poke her fingers shed take the yard stitch and somehow would get me back every time. ( I miss those days id laugh and laugh!)
So all this being said I want to be able to share stories I know and share the passion she shared with me and my family with others and try to keep hand quilting alive! as there are not too many of us left and I will teach anyone who is interested in learning it! So on that note i will stop for tonight and get this new blog going and i will be adding my mothers stuff into this new blog and keep her passion and mine going. see you soon and i hope the get some input and hear your stories too!! much love Janetta PHQ
